Coast Guard Rescues 5 Men after Boat Capsizes off Florida
Coast
Five men were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after their
boat capsized 11 miles off the Florida coast, officials said Sunday. The
Jacksonville command center dispatched a boat and helicopter crew at 10:15 a.m.
after receiving a call from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office about the overturned
24-foot vessel.
Upon arrival, the Coast Guard found the men atop the
capsized boat, wearing life jackets. They were safely brought aboard the
response boat and transported back to the Mayport Boat Ramp in Jacksonville,
Florida. The Coast Guard released images of the rescue, including one showing
the men being greeted by their families and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission personnel.
The vessel was left behind for the owner to salvage. No
injuries were reported. Jacksonville commander Nick Barrow emphasized the
importance of life jackets in unpredictable and dangerous water situations.
The cause of the capsizing is under investigation. Last
month, the Coast Guard rescued seven adults and a child from a capsized boat 36
miles off Boca Grande, Florida, CBS Miami reported.
