Zeinab Badawi Recognized Among Africa's Most 100 Change
Makers 2023
Zeinab Badawi, a prominent Sudanese-British television and
radio journalist, has been acknowledged as one of Africa's top 100 change
makers in 2023.
Badawi made her mark as the inaugural presenter of what
would later become ITV News and as co-host alongside Jon Snow on Channel 4 News
from 1989 to 1998, before her tenure at BBC News. Her role expanded to include
presenting World News Today on BBC Four and BBC World News, as well as hosting
Reporters, a BBC weekly segment featuring various reports.
During her time at the BBC, Badawi served as a presenter and
reporter for political programs, including Westminster Live, and as a regular
host on radio programs such as The World Tonight on Radio 4 and Newshour on BBC
World Service. In 2005, she took over as presenter of The World on BBC Four,
later rebranded as World News Today.
Badawi's contributions extend beyond journalism; she has
been recognized for her philanthropic efforts as well. She founded and chairs
the Africa Medical Partnership Fund (AfriMed), dedicated to supporting local
medical professionals in Africa. In October 2021, Badawi assumed the presidency
of SOAS University of London.
Her achievements have garnered international acclaim,
earning her prestigious awards such as the International TV Personality of the
Year at the Annual Media Awards in November 2009. In August 2018, she was
honored with the President's Medal of the British Academy for her outstanding
contributions to international political journalism.
Recognizing her among Africa’s most impactful 100 change
makers is well deserved.
