17th April 2023 By The Global Heroes Health

On the 17th of April every year, World Hemophilia Day is celebrated to honor the disease and increase awareness about hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. Hemophilia is a rare genetic blood disease where the blood cannot clot, leading to extensive bleeding after an injury or surgery. The primary clotting factors, Factor VIII or Factor IX, are absent in hemophilic individuals, leading to longer bleeding periods. The theme for World Hemophilia Day 2023 is "Access for All: Partnership. Policy. Progress. Get your government involved, integrate inherited bleeding disorders into national policy."

The signs and symptoms of hemophilia include excessive bleeding or bruising, hematoma, bleeding into muscle or soft tissue, bloody stool, blood in the urine, frequent nosebleeds, and bleeding after dental or surgical procedures. Hemophilia is diagnosed through tests such as CBC, PT, activated partial thromboplastin time test, and specific clotting factor tests. Treatment for hemophilia involves increasing or replacing clotting factors through replacement therapy or antifibrinolytics.

Hemophilia is not preventable, and genetic testing may be recommended for individuals with the disease who wish to have children. The International Federation of Hemophilia was founded by Frank Schnabel, whose birthday is celebrated on World Hemophilia Day. The day aims to raise awareness about hemophilia and promote understanding of the disease.
