Vicky Ntetema Recognized Among Africa's Most 100 Change Makers 2023
Vicky Ntetema, a Tanzanian journalist renowned for
uncovering the harrowing truth behind the killings of people with albinism in
Tanzania, has been honored as one of Africa's Top 100 Change Makers for 2023.
Ntetema's pivotal role in shedding light on this grave issue propelled her to
the position of Executive Director of Under the Same Sun in Tanzania.
Her groundbreaking undercover investigation revealed the
disturbing reality that many Tanzanians perceived individuals with albinism as
spectral entities, while local witch doctors coveted their body parts for
purported magical properties, believed to bring prosperity.
The global outcry that ensued was largely due to Ntetema's
relentless reporting, which thrust the issue onto the international stage.
However, her brave stance came at a cost - facing grave threats, Ntetema was
forced into hiding, necessitating constant protection, and even compelling her
to leave the country on two occasions for her safety.
In recognition of her unwavering courage, Ntetema was
honored with the Courage in Journalism Award by the International Women's Media
Foundation in 2010. Additionally, in 2016, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
bestowed upon her the prestigious International Women of Courage Award, further
cementing her status as a beacon of bravery and change in the pursuit of
justice.
