Theresa Kachindamoto Recognized Among Africa's Most 100
Change Makers 2023
Theresa Kachindamoto, the paramount chief of Malawi's Dedza
District, has emerged as a pivotal figure in combating child marriages and
promoting education in her community. With authority over more than 900,000
individuals, she wields significant influence in a region grappling with
poverty and a high prevalence of HIV infections.
In Malawi, where over half of the girls were married before
turning 18, Kachindamoto's efforts stand out against a backdrop of deeply
ingrained traditions and legal complexities. Despite the passage of laws
forbidding marriage before the age of 18, customary practices and parental
consent loopholes persisted, perpetuating the cycle of early marriages.
Determined to effect change, Kachindamoto took decisive
action within her district. She persuaded 50 sub-chiefs to abolish early
marriage and annul existing unions, resulting in the dissolution of over 3,500
child marriages by 2019. Her firm stance led to the dismissal and subsequent
reinstatement of sub-chiefs in areas where child marriages persisted,
underscoring her unwavering commitment to the cause.
Through a multifaceted approach involving community
engagement and legal reform, Kachindamoto successfully challenged entrenched
norms. She rallied support from various stakeholders, including mothers,
teachers, religious leaders, and NGOs, in her crusade against child marriages.
Despite facing resistance, particularly from parents and people
entangled in customary unions, she persisted, emphasizing the importance of
education in breaking the cycle of poverty and ignorance.
Kachindamoto's advocacy has gained international acclaim,
positioning her as a beacon of hope in the fight against child marriages. Her
pragmatic strategies and unwavering resolve serve as a blueprint for similar
initiatives elsewhere, with organizations like UN Women and UNICEF seeking to
replicate her success.
In her own words, Kachindamoto encapsulates the
transformative power of education: "Educate a girl and you educate the
whole area, you educate the world." Her tireless efforts epitomize the profound
impact that dedicated individuals can have in reshaping communities and
fostering a brighter future for generations to come.
