According to a recent Nevada filing, Elon Musk has founded a new artificial intelligence (AI)-focused business named X.AI. According to the filing, Musk serves as the company's director, while Jared Birchall, the director of Musk's family office, is identified as the organization's secretary. On March 9th, 2023, Musk formed the company. Rumors about his AI project had been going around for a few days, with claims that he had bought tens of thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs) for a forthcoming generative AI product.
As previously reported by The Financial Times, Musk intended to start an AI company to take on Microsoft-backed OpenAI. With the help of technologies like ChatGPT and GPT-4, the company that Musk co-founded in 2015 but departed in 2018 has emerged as a major player in AI in recent months. Microsoft and Google's current efforts to more completely incorporate AI technologies into their businesses are being driven by OpenAI.
Musk was recently questioned on Twitter Spaces about the GPUs he had bought, but he made no mention of his intentions to create an AI business. The moniker X.AI is consistent with Musk's branding for Twitter's X Corp. and the "X" designation he gave to his idea for a "everything app."
In recent years, Musk has been a prominent opponent of OpenAI and has signed a petition urging a halt to "giant AI experiments." Despite this, OpenAI has developed significantly in recent years and has remained an important participant in the AI industry. Given Musk's track record of success with businesses like SpaceX and Tesla, his new startup, X.AI, is expected to pose a serious threat to OpenAI.
