Trump Grants TikTok 75-Day Extension amid Ban Controversy
President Donald Trump has issued an executive order
granting TikTok a 75-day reprieve to comply with U.S. laws requiring either a
sale of its U.S. operations or a ban. The move temporarily halts enforcement of
a law passed by Congress last year and signed by former President Joe Biden,
which went into effect over the weekend.
The decision was one of several directives signed by Trump
on Monday evening. Speaking in the Oval Office, he quipped, “Every rich person
has called me about TikTok.” When asked about his change of stance since
attempting to ban TikTok in 2020, Trump said, “Because I got to use it.”
TikTok’s services, which were briefly halted for American
users on Saturday due to the ban, resumed after Trump announced plans to issue
an executive order allowing the app to continue operating during the compliance
period. The platform, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has faced scrutiny
over national security concerns and previously defied laws requiring it to
divest its U.S. operations.
The Supreme Court upheld the law last Friday, paving the way
for the ban to take effect on Sunday.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew attended Trump’s inauguration on
Monday, alongside tech industry leaders like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and
Jeff Bezos. The platform has 170 million users in the U.S., making it a
significant player in the social media landscape.
Meanwhile, interest in acquiring TikTok has surged. YouTube
star MrBeast posted a video from a private jet hinting at a potential bid,
calling it “crazy.” Other high-profile figures, including Musk and "Shark
Tank" investor Kevin O’Leary, have also expressed interest in the
platform.
This marks a striking turn of events for Trump, who had
supported banning TikTok during his first term, signaling a potential shift in
the app’s future in the U.S.
