Despite being aware of the benefits of condoms in reducing
the risk of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases STDs, a concerning
number of young women in Ghana are engaging in unprotected sex.
The 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, conducted by
the Ghana Statistical Service, reveals that 80% of these women fall between the
ages of 15 and 24. Shockingly, 79% of them are fully aware of the health
advantages of consistent condom use.
This trend is particularly worrisome given the
disproportionate impact on women in HIV contraction rates. In August 2023, the
Ghana AIDS Commission reported that females comprised two-thirds of new HIV
infections in the country.
Out of the overwhelming number of 16,574 new HIV cases recorded in the year 2022, females accounted for 10,927, while males made up 5,647 cases, as per the 2022 National and Sub-National HIV/AIDS estimates and projections.
These statistics underscore the urgent need for targeted
interventions to promote safe sex practices among young women in Ghana.
