Troops from the Special Military Task Force, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), have apprehended two individuals suspected of being involved in the killing of Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu.
This was revealed in a statement issued by Maj. Samson Zhakom, the OPSH media officer, on Wednesday in Jos.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Okechukwu, a priest from the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, Kaduna State, was abducted on March 4 around 9:15 p.m.
The priest was taken from his residence in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, and his body was discovered the following day, March 5.
Zhakom stated that the suspects were arrested on Tuesday after a raid conducted by troops in the Warsa-Piti community of Lere LGA.
“The arrests were made after a raid on the prime suspect’s hideout in a Ruga settlement within the Warsa-Piti community, Lere LGA, Kaduna State. During preliminary questioning, the prime suspect, a 33-year-old man, confessed that he had been hired by another individual who lived with the late priest to carry out the kidnapping,” he explained.
The follow-up operation led to the capture of the second suspect at Agwan Sarki, Tachira, in Kaura LGA.
Both suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation.
Zhakom also mentioned that efforts are ongoing to locate the other individuals involved in this heinous crime.
