Techies Overcome Region Lock to Enable AirPods Hearing Aid
Feature for Grandmother
When Apple introduced the hearing aid feature in its AirPods
Pro 2, the excitement was dampened by its region restrictions, making it
inaccessible in countries like India. However, three Indian tech enthusiasts—Rithvik
Vibhu, Rithwik Jayasimha, and Arnav Bansal—took on the challenge to unlock this
feature for their grandmother and shared their journey on their blog, Lagrange
Point.
Jayasimha recounted how the release of iOS 18.1 prompted him
and his father to buy AirPods Pro 2 for his grandmother, who has hearing
difficulties. They were disappointed to discover the feature was region-locked,
available only in select countries. Undeterred, the group launched an ambitious
project to bypass the restrictions.
Using innovative solutions like building a Faraday cage to
block Wi-Fi signals and spoofing device locations, the team managed to trick
Apple's stringent geo-restriction measures. They documented the complex
process, which included experimenting with leaky microwaves and constructing a
custom cage from aluminum foil to block electromagnetic signals effectively.
Jayasimha highlighted the significance of their efforts,
noting that hearing aids in India can cost between $590 and $9,470. In
contrast, AirPods Pro 2, priced significantly lower, offer a budget-friendly
alternative for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.
The group's ingenuity received widespread admiration on
social media. Comments like "This is public service!" and "Great
stuff!" celebrated their work. Although unlocking the feature was
challenging, their success not only helped their grandmother but also benefited
several others in their community.
Their journey underscores how innovative thinking and
teamwork can overcome technological barriers, making essential features
accessible to those who need them most.
