Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy senate president of Nigeria, his wife, and another man were all given prison sentences in the UK for directing an organ trafficking conspiracy. The "motivating factor" driving the scheme to send a young guy to London's Royal Free Hospital as a possible kidney donor for his daughter was discovered to be Ekweremadu.

His wife received a term of four years and six months in jail, while the other guy received a ten-year sentence. He received a sentence of nine years and eight months. The judge stated that Ekweremadu was the scheme's main proponent and that the act of harvesting human organs reduces humans to exchangeable commodities.

After the donation of Ekweremadu's daughter was ultimately turned down, it was found that the family had been trying to market others for organ transplants. The con victim, who thought he was being prepared for a second transplant in Nigeria, rushed to the police out of concern for his life. An globally outlawed commercial enterprise that takes advantage of those who are financially disadvantaged is kidney donation for reward. Ekweremadu was a major contributor to the 2014 law that outlawed the conduct he took part in.
