A 71-year-old Moroccan doctor and his assistant, aged 64, were arrested for attempting to perform an illegal abortion on a 15-year-old girl in their private clinic in Meknes. Both were taken into custody while the teenager, her mother, and an accompanying woman were placed at the disposal of the judicial investigation.

Moroccan law prohibits abortions, except in cases of danger to the mother's health, with penalties ranging from six months to five years in prison for women seeking or performing the procedure. Every day, 600 to 800 clandestine abortions are carried out in the country under harsh conditions, leading women's rights activists to campaign for its legalization.

In 2015, an official commission recommended legalizing abortion in cases of force majeure, including rape or serious fetal malformations, but no law has yet been passed to support this recommendation. The feminist collective "Hors-la-Loi" protested on Facebook, denouncing the lack of options for the teenager and calling for the decriminalization of abortion and the protection of individual freedoms in Morocco.
