Insurance Companies Urged to Show Empathy Towards Accident
Victims
At the inaugural zonal meeting of the ECOWAS Brown Card
Insurance Scheme in Conakry, Guinea, Mr. Henry Bukari, Chairman of the Council
of Bureaux, called on insurance practitioners to expedite the compensation
process for motor accident victims under the scheme. He stressed the importance
of demonstrating empathy towards victims, particularly those from other ECOWAS
countries.
The ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme aims to facilitate
the free movement of people and goods within the ECOWAS region by ensuring
swift and fair resolution of cross-border claims.
Mr. Bukari highlighted the importance of revising technical
texts related to the scheme, particularly those influenced by the CIMA Code, to
improve the settlement process for cross-border claims. He urged insurance
practitioners to not only expedite compensation payments but also to show
empathy towards victims from other ECOWAS countries.
The meeting served as a platform for participants from
various ECOWAS countries to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore
new opportunities for cooperation. The discussions focused on overcoming
barriers to free movement and promoting sustainable development across West
Africa.
Mrs. Souadou Baldé, Second Vice-Governor of the Central Bank
of the Republic of Guinea, contributed by sharing positive experiences and
making relevant recommendations to achieve the scheme's objectives.
A significant topic of discussion was whether to include
concubinage relationships in the compensation criteria for accident victims who
die in cross-border incidents. This reflects the scheme's ongoing efforts to
address diverse social contexts and ensure fair treatment for all affected
individuals.
