GMet Forecasts Heightened Rainstorms and Destructive Winds
in Ghana
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a
cautionary alert, urging Ghanaians to prepare for intensified rainfall possibly
persisting until the conclusion of July. The advisory comes in response to
reports of widespread flooding in Accra, the nation's capital, following a
heavy deluge on Monday, May 6, 2024.
Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of Central Analysis and Forecast at
GMet, elucidated that various regions, especially within the southern corridor,
are anticipated to witness thunderstorms accompanied by formidable winds. These
winds, she cautioned, could result in significant damage, including the
dislodging of building roofs, the shedding of tree limbs, and the toppling of
inadequately rooted trees.
In an interview with a Ghana base News Hub - Citinews,
Ahafianyo stressed the need for heightened vigilance, particularly in the
southern sector, emphasizing the likelihood of frequent rains coupled with
moderate to severe windy conditions, lightning, and thunderstorms throughout
the period spanning from now until the end of June or July.
GMet's advisory serves as a vital prompt for residents and
authorities alike to bolster preparedness measures and mitigate potential risks
posed by the impending inclement weather.
