The management of the University of Ghana (UG) has expressed
strong condemnation of a recent incident of assault on its main campus - Legon.
The incident, which has gained widespread attention through a video circulating
on social media, involves the assault of a young man by some individuals on
campus.
In a press statement released by the university's Director
of Public Affairs, Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, it was revealed that
preliminary information suggests the victim was initially spotted in the
Okponglo area dressed in female attire. He had reportedly informed some women
in the area that he was seeking accommodation, and they, assuming him to be
female, offered him a place to stay.
However, upon discovering the true gender of the individual
later that night, the women, feeling deceived, allegedly assaulted and expelled
him from the area. Subsequently, a refuse collector, also assuming the victim
to be female, intervened and took him to a refuse collection site behind Dr.
Hilla Limann Hall on the University of Ghana campus. The following morning,
upon realizing the true gender of the victim, the refuse collector reportedly
assaulted him and instructed him to leave the area.
The university's security personnel promptly intervened, and
both the young man and the refuse collector, neither of whom is a student of
the University, were handed over to the Legon Police for a thorough
investigation.
The statement underscored the seriousness with which the
university's management views the incident, stating, "Management takes its
commitment to the enforcement of the rules and regulations governing the
University seriously, and any member of the University community identified to
be involved in this cruel incident will be appropriately sanctioned."
Additionally, the university assured the public that it
would collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a
comprehensive investigation into the matter. The focus is not only on seeking
justice but also on upholding the safety and well-being of all members of the
university community, as well as visitors on its campuses.
