Tragic Elephant Attack Claims Life of American Tourist in
Zambia
A New Mexico woman visiting Zambia was trampled and killed
by an elephant on Wednesday, marking the second such fatal attack in the
country this year, local officials reported.
The victim, 64-year-old Juliana Gle Tourneau, was killed
when an elephant from a herd the tourists were observing attacked their vehicle
in Livingstone, Zambia. Tourneau was thrown from the vehicle and trampled by
the elephant.
The incident occurred near the Maramba Cultural Bridge,
where the group had stopped due to traffic caused by the elephant herd.
"Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, of New Mexico, United States
of America, died on Wednesday around 17:50 after being knocked from a parked
vehicle which had stopped due to traffic caused by elephants around the Maramba
Cultural Bridge," Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka told
the Zambian national broadcaster, ZNBC.
This is the second such attack in Zambia this year. In
March, another American tourist was killed during a game drive in Kafue
National Park when an elephant charged a truck and flipped it over, killing the
tourist and injuring five others.
