Soldiers’ Angels Combat Food Insecurity for Military
Personnel and Veterans
In a nation that prides itself on honoring its military, the
harsh reality of food insecurity among veterans and active-duty service members
stands as a stark contradiction. Despite their immense sacrifices, many find
their basic needs unmet. Yet, organizations like Soldiers’ Angels offer a
beacon of hope, serving those who have selflessly served.
Soldiers’ Angels, a national non-profit dedicated to
supporting military personnel, veterans, and their families, has launched a
vital initiative to tackle food insecurity within these communities. The
inaugural Military and Veteran Food Distribution event in Dallas, held on
September 8, 2023, demonstrated an outpouring of support for those in need. It began
an ongoing commitment to assist military-connected individuals and families
facing hunger.
On the second Friday of each month, the Dallas Military and
Veteran Food Distribution event extends a lifeline to up to 200 pre-registered
military-connected individuals and families, providing them with an average of
75 lbs. of groceries. Recognizing that hunger knows no rank, Soldiers’ Angels
have widened their support to include active-duty service members, guardsmen,
and reservists, acknowledging the pressing need within these communities.
Amy Palmer, president of Soldiers’ Angels, underscores the
impact of these efforts: "If they're living on disability, it really isn't
enough. Some of them are on food stamps, and this helps them get by."
For recipients like Marine Veteran Mike Leddy, who supports
a family of four on disability, Soldiers’ Angels’ provisions offer essential
relief, allowing them to allocate scarce resources to other vital expenses.
Their generosity serves as a poignant reminder that sacrifices made in service
are not forgotten and that the community values their dedication.
Soldiers’ Angels’ reach extends beyond veterans to
active-duty personnel, a population often overlooked in discussions of food
insecurity. With approximately 15.4 percent of active-duty personnel
experiencing low food security, the expanded initiative comes at a crucial
time.
Soldiers’ Angels not only provide sustenance but also
cultivate a sense of community among their beneficiaries. Retired Army Veteran
Michael Hood, having benefited from their support during deployments, now
volunteers at the Dallas Food Distribution site, embodying the spirit of giving
back.
"It’s great to be a part of the organization on the
volunteer side so I can give back to people who gave to me when I was
deployed," shares Michael.
Soldiers’ Angels’ unwavering commitment to alleviating food
insecurity among military personnel and veterans extends throughout the year.
Holiday-focused campaigns offer vital support during challenging times.
Through their dedication and the support of volunteers and
sponsors, they continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who
have served their country - and there are ample opportunities for others to
join in, whether as volunteers or donors.
