Former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, has criticized Ghana’s multi-party democratic system, arguing that it has failed the broader population while enriching a privileged political elite.

Speaking at the University of Education, Winneba’s Public Lecture Series on April 11, Prof. Akosa declared, “I sincerely believe, and I will say it here today, that multi-party democracy has done nothing for this country.”

He contended that beneath the appearance of democratic progress lies a system that benefits only a select few.

“Since 1992, the only beneficiaries have been the political class. The professional class, working class, and underclass have been completely sidelined,” he said, adding, “It’s as if your voice and presence in this country mean nothing.”

Prof. Akosa warned that such systemic inequality undermines sustainable national development. He also called for a radical transformation in how Ghana leverages its human capital.

“We must be willing to harness the intellectual strength of this country to drive progress,” he urged.
