Mark
Gachagua, a Kenyan advocate for Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights
(SRHR) has been honored by Humanitarian
Awards Global, as one of Africa’s most impactful 100 change makers.
As a fervent
youth advocate, Mark previously spearheaded WAYAN, an organization championing
SRHR for young people in Kenya. Under his leadership, WAYAN effectively
disseminated SRHR information to over two million individuals, amplifying
awareness and understanding.
Mark's impact
transcends mere advocacy, as he has engaged with over sixty policymakers through
targeted campaigns, advocating for crucial policy changes. Notably, his pivotal
role in launching the global "All in Campaign" demonstrates his
dedication to scaling up the fight against HIV/AIDS among adolescents,
addressing a pressing global health concern.
Furthermore,
Mark's leadership extends to his role as a Women Deliver Young Leader and as
the founder of Young People Advocating for Health (YAH), a youth-led
organization striving to empower young individuals aged 10-24 with awareness of
their SRHR rights, fostering a nationwide movement.
At
prestigious events such as the Women Deliver conference, Mark's voice
resonates, advocating for meaningful youth engagement in achieving Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) alongside esteemed figures like Kate Gilmore, UN
Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Mark's
impactful work has garnered international recognition, with features in
reputable publications such as the World Economic Forum and NPR. His ongoing
project targets youth aged 10-24, aiming to raise awareness about modern
contraceptives and SRHR rights, while also advocating for a dedicated
reproductive health budget to address shortages in healthcare facilities.
Driven by
strategic planning and a deep understanding of SRHR issues, Mark remains
resolute in his mission to effect positive change in the lives of girls and
young people in Kenya, leveraging his expertise to propel progress and empower
communities.
