Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, has dismissed President John Mahama’s recent national address outlining his 120-day social contract with Ghanaians, calling it “neither new nor extraordinary.”

Speaking on the Prime Morning Show on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Amekplenu criticized the President’s speech, arguing that it lacked depth and did not deserve public praise.

“President Mahama’s address to the nation yesterday [Wednesday] brought nothing new or extraordinary to the table. It certainly isn’t something Ghanaians should be applauding,” he said.

Drawing an analogy, Amekplenu likened the President’s renewed promises to the efforts of a struggling student attempting to redeem himself after repeated academic failures.

“Mahama’s posture resembles that of a student who failed in a previous term but now wants to convince everyone he will succeed,” he remarked.

He added with a touch of sarcasm that, the Mahama administration had “skillfully misled Ghanaians and should perhaps be applauded for that,” suggesting that the government’s efforts were more about managing perception than achieving real progress.

Amekplenu also took aim at members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of double standards. He noted that many who had previously criticized the Akufo-Addo government for economic hardships linked to tariff hikes are now overseeing similar increases under Mahama’s leadership, highlighting a 14% rise in electricity tariffs and a 4.0% increase in water tariffs.

Turning to Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which governs mining in forest reserves, the NPP communicator reminded the public that President Mahama had initially promised to repeal the law, not merely amend it.

“The President made a clear commitment to repeal L.I. 2462, not just to make changes to it,” Amekplenu emphasized.
