On April 15, 2023, SpaceX successfully launched Taifa-1, the first operational satellite for Kenya, into orbit from California. The satellite was created and developed by a group of Kenyan experts, and it will offer useful information for Kenya's environmental and agricultural monitoring. Crop production predictions will be improved thanks to the satellite's multispectral camera's high-quality data of earth observation.
According to Kenya's Ministry of Defense and Kenya Space Agency (KSA), this was "a major milestone" that will help the country's developing space industry. Given that Kenya is now suffering from a severe drought, the satellite will immediately improve the country's food security.
An engineer at KSA named Pattern Odhiambo demonstrated that agricultural output predictions may be made using information from the satellite's multispectral sensor.
A SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket lifted up from the American base of Vandenberg (California) at 06H48 GMT on Saturday after the launch was repeatedly delayed earlier in the week due to poor weather. Several tens of satellites, including Taifa-1, were launched by the rocket. In 2018, Kenya launched its first nanosatellite into orbit. According to Space in Africa, a Nigerian firm that monitors African space initiatives, more than 50 African satellites have been launched into orbit as of 2022. In 1998, Egypt became the first nation on the continent to launch a satellite into orbit.
